Karaoke is a great way to meet new people and express your creativity. I dig the mash-up section. One other good point is to know your range... are you good at singing low like Johnny Cash? Or better at hitting those high notes like Bon Jovi? I also like your point about the audience - I believe you are there to entertain, so be wise to what the audience might like to hear; signing your fave unknown Radiohead song might be nice for you, but your listeners will likely tune that out.
